Dear DSA Members,

This past Holiday season has been very rewarding to me personally and to The Day Spa Association. We received so many best wishes from members, that it is impossible for me to list them all, let alone reply to them personally. So please accept this as a heartfelt THANK YOU for your love and the support you extended to me and the DSA staff. It is very much appreciated and we all had a jolly good time enjoying the many goodies we received during the season.

2006 is starting with many new and promising projects… with upcoming trade shows we are participating in, including our exclusive Day Spa Expo & Business Forum!

I hope to see many of you in Las Vegas at the beginning of next month, or in LA at the end of February or maybe in Jamaica in the middle!

Spafully,

Hannelore R. Leavy
Executive Director

Watch for news about our participation during July Market Week.

    Tradeshow tips

By Julia O'Connor, Speaker, Consultant & Author of The Trade Show Reader

To get ready for the trade show season, here is Julia with some thoughts …

Ever Whant to be The Boss?
    The Really Big Boss?
    The Icon of Your Industry?

It is not just fantasy. You can do it. But you MUST do it right.

It's easy. Every time you participate at a trade show, every time you do the meet-and-greet in the booth, or walk the aisles, or sit next to people at lunch or an educational session.....you are The Boss.
Why? People remember People. They remember attitudes, behavior, appearance and knowledge before they remember the company name, and those who meet you do associate You with Your Company.

When you immediately associate a CEO with a firm's name, those executives have three things going for them besides Fortune or Forbes PR. They have ....

    A GREAT VISION --
They know the company they manage. They can articulate the vision of where and how the company is changing, progressing, and moving forward – very succinctly and with great enthusiasm. You want to get on board right now! You want to do business with them because they are successful in selling you their vision. This is not snake oil salesmanship. This is
true-from-the-heart-and-gut appreciation of their business. You do know people like this and you admire them. You, too, can be one of them.

    More Tips Click Here

WHEN YOU WALK THE AISLES -  you are fair game for any exhibiting company. If you know the rules about being a Good Prospect, it will make your life easier.

HOW TO BE A GOOD PROSPECT AT A TRADE SHOW --
Trade shows are fast paced, noisy with high energy and expectations. Rather than just wandering the aisles and collecting stuff, as a Prospect for any exhibiting company, you should take your time at the show seriously. Those who attend are better prepared than ever before, partly because of internet research and partly because trade shows are serious business.

    Dear Industry Leader:
The NCEA was founded in January 2000 and over the past 5 years, we have been instrumental in setting National Standards that serve to protect our industry. It is the NCEA's position that 600 hours of education should be the minimum amount of training required prior to licensing of an esthetician. NCEA's Basic 600 Hour Esthetician Job Task Analysis represents the practical and theoretical knowledge that an Esthetician needs to work in today's skin care industry and should be implemented in every state.

Legislative Update (Massage) - New Jersey
    January 2006

Rosemary Weiner, Legislature Chair – DSA

I made a great contact......a Lawyer that is a silent partner in a spa.  His legitimate establishment was closed down by the town of Fairlawn, NJ.  He is in the hunt & willing to help, free of charge.  He is fighting the town of Fairlawn on an issue that we can help him with; i.e. definition of a Day Spa, etc.  I already sent him to the association's web site for that info and I am guiding him in other directions, including membership. I've sent him a ton of information and we'll be back in contact over the next couple of days.  I'll keep you & the members posted.

I also gave a presentation at the Bergen County Vocational School Advisory Board meeting (I am a member of the board).  We generated alot of interest and I have followed up with the salon & spa owners that were in attendance.

I was also a speaker at the Parisian Beauty Acadamy and made contact with numerous salon & spa owners that were very motivated by our information.  I'm coordinating their follow-up as we speak.

True Spa Consulting's Keith & Andre (formerly of Miss Celies in New Orleans) Check In

    By Gwen Mickelson
    Santa Cruz Sentinel

SANTA CRUZ — New Orleans business owners Keith and Andre West-Harrison packed only a few necessities when they evacuated ahead of Hurricane Katrina, figuring they'd be back in half a week. They were gone 37 days. And though their property made it through the hurricane relatively unscathed, the West-Harrisons — Keith is 34, Andre is 38 — have decided to make a fresh start. They're selling their bed-and-breakfast and spa and moving to the Santa Cruz area to start a spa consulting service and launch a new personal-care product line. "Santa Cruz has a lot of New Orleans qualities," said Keith West-Harrison. "You have some tattooed freaks around. We like that."

The couple, who own Miss Celie's Spa Orleans and the Olde Victorian Inn in the French Quarter, stayed glued to the television for days after they evacuated, desperately seeking news about their business, which also serves as their home.

Baby Boomers Want to Enjoy Money and Not Save

AC Nielsen researchers have found that aging baby boomers plan to spend their hard-earned money on themselves in retirement, rather than leaving it to their children. Baby boomers instead intended to try to provide for their children by paying for higher education and allowing children to live rent-free at home for longer. Baby boomers also wished to move past old regrets, such as unfulfilled career aspirations, leaving school early, lack of confidence in the workplace, and more; their attitude of spending their money on themselves may reflect a compensatory mechanism for their earlier shortcomings.

    Alternative Health -
    Prayer Power

Scientific research on faith's health effects.

What constitutes a “dose” of prayer? How does one define prayer? Is channeling Buddhist intention or reiki energy the same thing as praying to a Judeo-Christian God? And how do you determine whether it was prayer that made a patient better, or something else? There are enormous methodological and conceptual problems with the studies of distant prayer,” said Dr. Richard Sloan, a professor of behavioral medicine at Columbia University in Manhattan . The study of distant healing was once the realm of eccentric scientists, but the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has spent $2.2 million on studies of distant healing and intercessory prayer since 2000 – a fraction of the agency's annual budget, which totaled $117 million in 2004.

    Airlines Must Honor Rival's Tickets

    - watch for new developments -

The U.S. Senate passed legislation to require U.S. airlines to honor tickets issued by failed rivals for at least one year. The provision, which was part of a $66 billion transportation bill that passed the Seante 93-1, requires airlines flying on the same route as a carrier that stops operating because of bankruptcy to accommodate passengers if it has open seats on that route. The surviving airline could charge no more than a $100 roundtrip fee. The Senate's action, if adopted by the House of Representatives, would renew a similar provision in the law that expired November 19. The new provision would be in effect until November 30, 2006. It was backed by Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Mont.), the chairman of the Senate aviation subcommittee. The provision gives travelers confidence to buy airline tickets on bankrupt carriers and is backed by banks and credit card companies that don't want to cover the costs of unused tickets if passengers seek reimbursement when an airline stops flying. Airlines not under bankruptcy protection, such as American Airlines, objected because the provisions place too many limits on the amount they can charge to rebook passengers. The larger bill must still be reconciled with the House of Representatives, which didn't inlcude the extension of the ticket requirement in its version of the legislation, passed on June 30.
