Boomers Want to Enjoy Money and Not Save
AC Nielsen researchers have found that aging baby boomers plan to spend
their hard-earned money on themselves in retirement, rather than leaving
it to their children. Baby boomers instead intended to try to provide
for their children by paying for higher education and allowing children
to live rent-free at home for longer. Baby boomers also wished to move
past old regrets, such as unfulfilled career aspirations, leaving school
early, lack of confidence in the workplace, and more; their attitude
of spending their money on themselves may reflect a compensatory mechanism
for their earlier shortcomings.
Forecast for 2030: Seniors to Outnumber Kids in 10 States
The United States Census Bureau reported that in the year 2000, no state
had more elderly than children. However, by the year 2030, the agency
predicts that 26 states will double their populations of people age 65
and over, representing the year when the oldest members of the baby boom
generation reach their 80s. Florida , Pennsylvania , Vermont , Wyoming
, North Dakota , Delaware , New Mexico , Montana , Maine , and West Virginia
will all have fewer children than elderly. The growth in the 65+ population
will be about 3.5 times the growth of the nation as a whole.
