TIPS FROM THE TRADE SHOW WIZARD

Julia's wisdom:
IF Everything that Happens Before the Show is Marketing -
IF Everything that Happens After the Show is Sales -
What Happens AT the Show??

COLD CALLS AT TRADE SHOWS:  Are you a professional salesperson sent to staff your booth? Be aware of the disconnect between the regular sales routine and a trade show. As a Pro, you know who you are calling on, what you are going to sell, how it is priced, and – what you will do with your bonus. As a Pro, you like the control and the challenge, and generally dislike any form of cold calling.   This is one reason trade shows are different. There are lots of strangers milling about and often they stop by your exhibit. What happens at a trade show? Is there such thing as a true cold call?

JULIA SAYS NO - These are my 5 reasons -

  • 1. IT DEPENDS ON YOUR SIDE OF THE AISLE –   As an exhibitor, there will be people you have never met, representing companies you do not know but – you are not calling on them. The visitor has the control of the encounter and approaches you. The cold call is TO you, not from you.
  • 2. MOST VISITORS ARE FOCUSED –   They have a problem – immediate, perceived, anticipated or just a dream. They are looking for a solution, and in most cases, they are casing your company as a solution provider. This means you need to listen carefully to strangers and slot their concerns into your arsenal of answers.
  • 3. MOST VISITORS KNOW YOUR COMPANY –   Maybe not intimately as a client, or even as prospect, but via Internet research, industry gossip, publicity, conversations with your clients. Unless you are a brand-new venture with absolutely no exposure, your name and reputation are out there. Today, there is no privacy thanks to technology.
  • 4. SELLING IS SELLING –   Does it really matter who starts the Sales Dance? Some exhibitors insist on leading this cha-cha – which may turn into a slow waltz when they don't listen or acknowledge control of the conversation belongs to the visitor.
  • 5. UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS –   At a trade show, the visitor is in charge. The visitor has made these major decisions TO– Spend the money, take the time to go the show. Read the Show Program, decide to visit certain exhibitors. Actually attend the show. Walk down each aisle. Spot which exhibits – pre-selected or not - to visit. Stop at your exhibit. Engage in conversation, request follow-up   What happens after this, is out of the control of the trade show staff and moves to the sales department for follow-up. At which point, it is certainly not a cold call.

Enjoy Your Next Show!

JULIA

DAY SPA EXPO & BUSINESS FORUM SPECIAL REPORT

Here are some remarks which are pouring in daily, both at Bentley's International Group offices and the DSA, from exhibitors and attendees alike!

I thought the Day Spa Expo was top notch.   We have already signed up for next year! Please continue to champion the business aspect of the spa business as this is what kept your trade show unique.

- Mary Lynne Blaesser, CIC,
  Director of Marketing
  Marine Agency Corporation, NJ

For a day spa owner, the Day Spa Expo was one of the best industry trade shows & conferences that I've ever attended. For the first time, spa owners, managers and day spa specialist have a conference/expo devoted and focused towards vital day spa issues. The Day Spa Expo's mix & quality of exhibitors and the educational sessions were excellent, the content and presenters, outstanding.

- Michael A. Carter Sr.,
  President/CEO
Athena Health Club and Day Spa

The hard work and professionalism that went into the conference was evident in every session I attended.  The credentials of the presenters and the quality of their content made it difficult to select which sessions to attend.
It is my opinion that the educational sessions were pertinent for all level of spas.  New or developing spas were hungry for information and they were not disappointed.

- Rosemary Weiner,
  Owner
  The Brass Rose , NJ

The quality of leads we gathered at the Day Spa Expo was absolutely exceptional. The floor was busy throughout the day yet pace was  comfortable, allowing our account representatives to spend a good  amount of time with each attendee and fully answer their questions.  Almost every person we talked to was an owner or manager, seriously looking to make decisions about their business.
Speaking as a vendor, this was a terrific show, very, very well worth our time and effort. We're looking forward to 2007!

- Lisa Taft Preston ,
  Owner
Preston Private Label Skincare , CA

As an exhibitor the Day Spa Expo was a great show for RX Music! Not only did we see faces of old, we met many potential new clients and even opened up a new account in London , England . We look forward to exhibiting next year.

- Jason Shapiro
  Chief Operating Officer
  Prescriptive Music

Thank you so much for the opportunity to exhibit at the Day Spa Expo 2006.  It was truly an amazing first year show!! The quality of attendees was superb, all real buying decision makers. We took orders from owners & operators and sold right on the show floor as well. We could not be happier!  Looking forward to exhibiting again in 2007!

- Stephen Katowitz
  Director Oxygen Experience
  Coral Springs , Florida USA

Thank you to Shane O'Sheeran of Bentley International Group for creating the day spa industry's first expo, devoted solely to owners and managers. We are extremely grateful to Bentley having given us the opportunity to be part of this venture. The DSA was assigned to provide the program for the Business Forum and my thanks go to the DSA Education Chair, Mr. Douglas Preston of Preston, Inc., assisted by DSA board member Mr. Skip Williams of Resources and Development and others. In addition, we held our annual Awards & Charity event, combining both of our awards into one evening and creating a new one for exhibitors. “Hearts for a Cure” was held to benefit Melanoma Research Foundation.

Ms. Linda Pilkington, Executive Director and Bill Marsch, Program Director, both from MRF and other volunteers were present, conducting the raffle, which raised $   We like to thank our sponsors who contributed so generously to enable us to hold this evening at Mandalay Bay!

Caribbean Health Tourism & Spa Conference, - Jamaica

Right after the DSE, it was off the JAMAICA, to be part of the Second Caribbean Health Tourism & Spa Conference, hosted by our Caribbean Chapter. Sharon & Theo Chambers were perfect hosts and the conference drew a lot of local spa owners, therapists and other entrepreneurs looking to develop health resorts in the Caribbean .

We were honored to meet the Minister of Industry and Tourism , the Secretary General of Ministry of Industry and Tourism, and many other dignitaries from the Jamaican government. The DSA/IMSA Caribbean Chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents, as well as the President of the Barbados Subchapter were also in attendance. The ministry of Industry and Tourism invited the US delegation to a wonderful Jamaican feast at Devon House, located on a previous plantation and now a public park.

The US delegation consisted of: Eric Light, President of the IMSA and also on the DSA Board; CEO of Strawberry Hill stressed the fact that we have come to Jamaica to learn, to accept them as our teachers; Catherine Atzen, ATZEN® / Universal Companies gave lymphobiology treatments to many dignitaries as well as attendees and to both Executive Directors; Sheila Light showed attendees the method of manual lymphatic drainage; Michael Effler of International Design Concept led two workshops on design. Hannelore R. Leavy addressed the crowd several times to introduce old and new friends.

"One friend I ran into after having lost touch since my Spa-Finders' days, was Jackie of Jackie's on the Reef – what a treat this was for me! Her lecture was right to the point how one can change their lives with simple diet, meditation and positive outlook – as true now than it was 20 years ago!"

Watch here for further expanded news on this exciting new world that is opening up for DSA/IMSA members!  And then comes Europe – ITALY at it's best - tentatively planed for September 2006. Tune into our next newsletter to learn more about that part of DSA/IMSA expansion!

Spafully,

Hannelore R. Leavy
