Message from Hannelore

Dear DSA Members,

The first few months of this year have seen us in many places spreading the word of the Day Spa Association:
February – the first Day Spa Expo, Las Vegas
February – Caribbean Spa and Tourism Expo Kingston Jamaica
April – Spa and Resort Expo Miami and The Americal Spa Expo
May - The Atlanta Spa Expo, a consumer event with a trade flair
And we are not done yet, as I am writing this, we are getting ready for the IECSC show in Las Vegas!

Spafully,

Hannelore R. Leavy

Tradeshow Tips

By Julia O'Connor, Speaker, Consultant & Author of The Trade Show Reader

Well, there you are at the show. You are wearing the corporate golf shirt with logo. Hopefully you have the right size so the sleeves don’t droop over your elbows and the tail doesn’t hit your knees. It is clean and you pressed it before you hit the show floor. You didn’t dribble salad dressing, chocolate or hot dog stuff down your front. Hooray – you are a neat representative for your company!

But what about the rest of you? Does it matter if your event is super casual or super professional? Probably not. Here are 7 Tips to keep you Looking Good –

1. Press the pants or skirt. Make sure the complete ensemble is complete.

2. Wear comfortable shoes that are appropriate to your outfit.

3. No toe-cleavage. Sandals or flip-flops - no matter how expensive or fashionable - belong at the pool or beach, not on a show floor.

4. Casual clothes do not hide droopy shoulders, an expanded waistline or poor posture. Look at yourself in a full-length mirror and make corrections. The first is to stand up straight.

5. Clean out your pockets. Take only the minimum cards, change, identification. Otherwise you may have unsightly bulges in your nether region.

6. Personal grooming is very important. You will not have time to primp and fluff on the show floor. Remember how dusty the hall is and how tired you will be by the end of the day. Before the show, get a good haircut. Get a manicure for both men and women – yeah, guys, what are you doing all day? – Shaking Hands.

7. You are on stage all the time. People will look at you front, back and all around. Be aware that your good side may not be what they are looking at.

Enjoy Your Next Show !

New Grant Named in Honor of the DSA

We received this honor from the Melanoma Research Foundation

Thank you, Bill Marsch!

The Melanoma Research Foundation Board has approved all named grants for 2006. As you might know, our priority goal is to attract young scientists to the field of melanoma research and have established our two-year, $100,000 junior investigator grants to do just that. This year we will award five first-year grants and three second-year renewal grants. Our total grant commitment to melanoma research grants this year, our 10th anniversary, will be $850,000. It is my pleasure to notify you and your associates that one of our new junior investigator grants will be named in part in honor of the Day Spa and International Medical Spa Associations. This first-year grant will be awarded to Dr. Mary Jo Turk of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth College. Dr. Turk's research is titled "Generating and Maintaining Post-Excisional Immunity against Poorly-Immunogenic Melanoma." A layman's write up on his two-year, $100,000 research grant will be in our Winter newsletter. This grant will be called "Award in Honor of Allured Publishing, Steve Czaben, Bill Gaudelli, Erik Hartzell, Char Kurant, Cindy Lanman, Day Spa & International Medical Spa Association, Jennifer Mitchell, Rodney Robinson and the 2005 Wings of Hope Recipients: Dr. Garo Armen, Carole Frost-Kelley, Mindy Gorman and Dr. John M. Kirkwood." Hannelore, we are all proud and grateful for what you and your associates are doing to help us raise money for melanoma research and are delighted to recognize your support with this grant. I continue to send to you and your associates our best wishes and thanks.

Program Director

Legislation-n-Regulation
Massage Therapy Organizations

A report from our Legislature Chair - Rosemary Weiner

On Sunday, Ann Goodwin and I met with representatives from the various Massage Therapy organizations and massage schools.

The purpose of the meeting was to form a coalition of all the different modalities. They hope to meet, at least, once a month.

This first meeting was to determine the status of the pending legislation in New Jersey and to develop strategies and positions to be presented back to the various organizations.

Employment Practices Liability

from MaryLynne Blaesser, Marine Agency

A continuation of our article on employee squabbles in the January Newsletter!

Very interesting information.  I am sending you an article which I think speaks to the subject about employee disputes etc.  The concept and the coverage for employment related issues is becoming a hot trend in all industries and the spa industry is no exception.

Feel free to include this article in any of your publications or website.

Did you know??

•  The most common basis for employment practices charges being filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) are: race, sex, retaliation, disability and age.

•  It is becoming more likely that you will have an employment related claim than a trip and fall claim.

•  10% of all employment related claims result in awards exceeding $1,000,000.

•  41% of all EPL claims are brought against small employers (10-15 employees)

•  The average cost to defend an EPL claim is $125,000.

•  Plaintiffs stand a 71% chance of winning a trial-jury verdict and the average verdict is $508,000.

•  Recent decisions made it clear that an employer may be liable for sexual harassment of an employee, EVEN if the harassment is not reported and the claimant's career is not harmed.

Fraud Alert

This is how it started – by Hannelore contacting one of our Day Spa members why we did not see her at the Day Spa Expo!

I was planning on this. I hate to reveal this but we were victim of an Internet scam! Our company was taken for over $3,000 a week ago. We are in the process of trying to retrieve our money. We had to forfeit our products due to the country they were shipped to wanting us to pay the customs and taxes in addition to an additional FedEx $300 fee to have them shipped back. The total of both equaled the value of my wholesale price, it wouldn't pay to have them shipped back, not to mention support the fraudulent Nigerian government policy.

Call the DSA to find out how you can become an accredited Day Spa Today! 201-865-2065

Dear Hannelore,

The Brass Rose is very proud to be a member of The Day Spa Association.  We are very grateful for the support, benefits and networking that we have gained by our membership in this organization.

More importantly, we are particularly proud and grateful to have accredited status from your organization.  Our accreditation status sets us apart and above the very crowded field of Day Spas.  We feel that accreditation status from a national, professional organization is a necessary credential which provides professional credibility as to who we are and what we do.  Although accreditation is an organizational option, we feel it is the only way to demonstrate our commitment to professional and quality standards.

All of our marketing materials tout our accredited status.  In addition, the media are most comfortable seeking information from an accredited spa.  We have been quoted and appeared in many public and professional media outlets because of our accredited status.

Sincerely,
Rosemary Weiner
Owner, The Brass Rose Spa
