Message
from Hannelore Happy Holidays!

The holiday season always approaches too quickly for me, no matter what I do to prepare, I never seem to be ready for it when it arrives. Hope that you are prepared for the rush in your personal and your business life!
Now that the trade show season is over we are in the final planning stages for 2007 and we look forward to your participation in the activities we are committed to, many of them outlined in this newsletter.
Your membership dollars are at work - We are launching our new website soon and we hope to receive your updates as requested. The information you provide will also appear in the 2007 Day Spa Directory, which will make its debut at the Day Spa Expo in Las Vegas in February.
During the DSE Charity and Awards Celebration we will be presenting the “Distinguished Day Spa Award” as well as the “Spa Person of the Year Award”. The former will be voted upon by our Board from the pool of accredited spas, the latter is voted by the industry. You will find the poll on our home page – hope you enjoy getting to know the Spa Persons we have chosen over this past year; your choice will determine who will go home this year with the trophy!
Our Survey committee is hard at work, but we need your help – if you have not yet done so, please take the Benchmarking Survey which will give day spas a guideline of what others are doing. As a thank you for your time you will receive a digital copy of the results! Do it now, before the holiday rush sets in!
Thank you for the continued support of YOUR Association … the results of our Association Survey are in and those of you who participated will be receiving a copy shortly. We learned a lot and you will see more changes coming your way … including regional chapters! So if you are interested in hosting one of these in your area, give me call!
With best wishes for healthy and happy holidays, I am
Spafully,

Hannelore R. Leavy
Executive Director

Tradeshow Tips
By Julia O'Connor, Speaker, Consultant & Author of The Trade Show Reader
1. TRADE SHOWS = WAIT & WEIGHT Do you have an inner voice that says - Calories Don’t Count When You’re on the Road.
Yum, yum, yum but sorry - your outer self shows your caloric creep after the show.
At the show, you wait for a break to eat, so you graze on the Hershey Kisses, munch leftover bagels and sip from the full-sugar, super-size soda you hid under the table. What happens while you wait? Weight creeps up because you’re off your regular schedule.
Here are 8 TIPS for Eating Right on the Road
1. GET UP EARLY & EXERCISE ... It gets your body and mind going. Even 15 minutes each day at the gym, in your room, or a walk around the block are fine. Walk the show. Take your 10,000 steps each day looking for new ideas.
2. SIT DOWN & EAT BREAKFAST ... Easy on the carbs – cereals, breads, croissants, bagels, etc. – heavy on protein and fruit. Eat real fruit, not dried or juices. Meet the prospect at the hotel for breakfast. Chew slowly, listen carefully and do a deal.
3. STOP NIBBLING AT EACH BOOTH ... Yes to chocolate. The darker the better – ignore milk chocolate – and take one small plain piece. Not more than one piece per hour. Skip the candy bars, cookies and frothy drinks.
4. SCHEDULE TIME TO RELAX ... Trade shows are rushed and conferences are scheduled to the max. Stress to produce and always be on-stage are inherent in your long days. But there are slower times and even a 30-minute break in a quiet area calms you down.
5. PACE YOUR ENTERTAINMENT ... Drinks. Appetizers. Breads. Fancy try-something-new meals. Sauces and, of course, Dessert. Client entertaining. Sales meetings. Cocktail parties. Just parties. Don’t overload a month of entertaining into three days...it will take you more than three days to get you back on schedule.
6. DO NOT EAT IN THE BOOTH ... First, it’s rude. Second – you look busy, so I won’t stop to bother you. Third, you will woof down something unhealthy.
7. DRINK WATER ... It is particularly important not to get dehydrated. Generally the atmosphere at a show is dry, your hours are longer than normal, your schedule permits fewer chances to refresh and fewer pit stops.
8. DO NOT TREAT YOURSELF AT THE AIRPORT ... Sure, you’re rushed but then you have to wait. You want to get started on work due so it’s easier to nibble with one hand while B’berrying or tapping on the laptop. All the wonderful aromas waft from the kiosks – muffins, french fries, burgers, liquor and fat, fat, fat. Be strong- ignore them. Eat a salad or energy bar. Start on your re-acclimation to your regular life.
Enjoy Your Next Show !

Trend Spotters

When the press calls us for interviews, they want day spa industry statistics, trends, and quotes from spa owners on very short notice—sometimes immediately. We would like to begin collecting this data from DSA members now, so we can provide the instant answers that journalists want and need.
What’s in it for you, other than supporting the industry and the DSA? Chances are you will be mentioned, if not quoted by the media contacts we are making.
If you would like to be one of our DSA Trend Spotters, here is how the program works:
1) We are inviting YOU, to become a DSA Trend Spotter. When the need arises for hot trends and industry news, we will do an email broadcast to the trend spotters group. The email would pose no more than 1-5 questions. The important part is that you respond quickly
2)The new DSA website will have a membership login area, where we will put up the short survey of DSA Trend Spotter questions. These responses will be collated/summarized on a regular basis and made available to the Executive Director for ready-access in media interviews.
3)Sometimes, there might be instructions for you to contact a specific writer/journalist directly. This can be an excellent PR opportunity for you!
4) The DSA would also like to seek out even greater media exposure, once we have your day spa trends survey answers available to us. So not only can we respond to interview requests, we can take this news-worthy information and actively pitch your day spa trend stories to the media.

Do You Have a Plan??DSA Health Insurance

November 2, 2006 – Union City, NJ – The DSA & IMSA are proud to announce that members of both organizations can now be covered by a single group policy at affordable rates and more than adequate coverage, especially in emergencies.
More than 14% of Americans - 41.2 million - are uninsured, many of them working in small businesses - most day spas and medical spas fall into this category. With premiums at an all-time high and rising, small businesses cannot afford to cover their employees and sometimes not even their owners.
“With insurance laws being governed by their State Boards the task of obtaining a group health policy outside the states’ borders for our members was an impossible undertaking”, says Hannelore R. Leavy, Founder and Executive Director of The Day Spa Association and The International Medical Spa Association. "After over a decade of searching we are finally able, with the help of our plan administrator CSS, to offer our members a group health insurance plan that is fit for the day spa and medical spa industries”.

Flu Season is Upon Us
Do you have a plan for your spa in the event of the avian or pandemic flu?
-By Erika Mangrum
Precautions you can take now for your spa in the event of an outbreak
The spa industry is dependent upon the touch therapies, and person to person contact. What would happen if 30-50% of the workforce were out either sick or taking care of loved ones who are sick? What would happen if the general public feared person-to-person contact, apprehensive of a deadly virus being transmitted? Could your spa afford to lose 50% of business for an extended period of time?
USA Today summarized a White House plan if a serious outbreak occurs.
USA Today excerpt: (full story)
“No one knows when a pandemic will occur, but experts fear that a bird-flu virus that is now spreading across the globe could spark one should it mutate and develop the ability to spread easily among people. The plan provides some idea of what could happen if a pandemic does occur.

For any business to grow, it takes a leader with fresh ideas and the ability to help people see them. The Guide to Day Spas
Suzanne Burchill, DSA member, just came out with a great way to "know where to go" when you're in the Big Apple. To rate a day spa, or any spa for that matter, is not as easy as rating a restaurant or other service establishments. The emphasis placed on health and beauty is so diverse and has many different approaches ranging from old and new, traditional and modern, east and west, fitness and pampering, relaxation and medical. Suz's Spies, The Guide to Day Spas in NYC is the first guide to truly rate day spas on the basis of service, treatments and value, and not according to their public relations efforts. Nice work, Suzanne!

Become Accredited Today!
Dear Hannelore,
The Brass Rose is very proud to be a member of The Day Spa Association. We are very grateful for the support, benefits and networking that we have gained by our membership in this organization.
More importantly, we are particularly proud and grateful to have accredited status from your organization. Our accreditation status sets us apart and above the very crowded field of Day Spas. We feel that accreditation status from a national, professional organization is a necessary credential which provides professional credibility as to who we are and what we do. Although accreditation is an organizational option, we feel it is the only way to demonstrate our commitment to professional and quality standards.
All of our marketing materials tout our accredited status. In addition, the media are most comfortable seeking information from an accredited spa. We have been quoted and appeared in many public and professional media outlets because of our accredited status.
Sincerely,
Rosemary Weiner

Host a Workshop
Host a Workshop To Enhance Your Spa's Visibility and Create New Business-
By Erika Mangrum
Besides providing your clients with a fun-filled day that combines education and relaxation in an educational forum that inspires people to take charge of their health, hosting workshop can enhance your spa's visibility and create new business.
Iatria Spa and Health Center, a full-service medically oriented spa with four locations in the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina, has launched two community outreach programs that support our brand — the Professional Women's Series and Iatria Living Series.
The Professional Women's SeriesThe Professional Women's Series uses both internal speakers and external consultants who partner with Iatria to deliver value-added courses that support the spa brand. One example is: "The Art of Balance," which focuses on finding the right balance between work, family, and self — no small feat. We charge for the programs and include a catered dinner and a glass of wine. We also include spa coupons. Clients come to the spa for the sessions, or if space does not allow, we use an off-site facility.
