Dear DSA Member,

As the direction of the wind and the color of the leaves change, so too does the shape and scope of our industry. We are in the midst of trade show season, which has to go on in spite of the tragic events that occurred this fall.
Don't forget to check out our Disaster Relief Board and see how you can be part of lending a helping hand to your peers as well as to day spa guests.
If you are doing a fundraising or are involved in any kind of charity/community activities, please let us know – posting on our CHARITY PAGE on www.dayspaassociation.com is FREE!

With best wishes for the upcoming holiday season, I am

Spafully,

Hannelore R. Leavy
Executive Director

    Tradeshow tips

WHEN YOU ARE NOT ON BOOTH DUTY - YOU ARE STILL ON SHOW DUTY

    ***********************************
    POWER SELLING OUTSIDE THE BOOTH
    ***********************************
Don't sit in your booth like a bump on a log. Don't stand around looking bored - and boring. Remember, people come to the show to see Your Company - make it visible throughout the entire show with these TIPS on making the most of selling opportunities.

When you're not on booth duty, you're still on show duty!

BECAUSE - If you think you're on sales duty only when you're in the booth - well, you're just plain wrong. A trade show is more than your booth, more than your time in that space. It's the entire venue, maybe even the whole city and it's your obligation to cast a wide net for prospects and clients.

Growth in spending is expected both online and offline

The National Retail Federation predicts 5%, and a recent Shop.org/BizRate online holiday spending study shows that 19 percent of online retailers are expecting holiday sales to double from 2004 and 54 percent expect to see growth between 20 and 99 percent!
This holiday season brings an abundance of opportunity for you to further your business. On the consumer side, the Shop.org/BizRate study reports that 56 percent of people surveyed said they plan to start their holiday shopping via a merchant's Web site. In addition, 60 percent of consumers said they plan to start holiday marketing by the end of October. (Whoa, that's now!). This proves the need to start reaching out to customers early. Thanks to the immediacy, ease and affordability of email marketing, you can still get your piece of the holiday pie.

Associations Win Big Under New Federal Fax Law

JULY 12, 2005 -- Washington -- President Bush signed a bill over the weekend that allows organizations to send faxes to their members and clients without first obtaining written approval.
The so-called "established business relationship" provision to the Junk Fax Prevention Act represents a major victory for associations, which feared that previous federal regulations would stymie their efforts to communicate with members via fax about membership renewal and convention registration

The Top 10 Things You Should Know Before You Blog

Three business blogging experts share their best tips for getting started in the blogosphere.

    From: Inc.com | July 25, 2005 By: Carole Matthews

It's been widely covered that weblogs are a viable way to build brand awareness and establish an individual's expertise in a particular area. "For a small business, [a weblog] is a perfect low-cost positioning-yourself-as-an-expert tool," notes Debbie Weil, the publisher of WordBizReport and Debbie's Blog , as well as author of an upcoming book on corporate blogging for Penguin Portfolio (2006). But what hasn't been covered is how to actually take the leap?

    Glossary of eTerms
    • Email Blocking - Email blocking occurs when the receiving email server (e.g. Yahoo!, AOL, Hotmail etc.) prevents an inbound email from reaching the inbox of the intended recipient. Often the sender of the email receives a "bounce" message indicating that their email has been "blocked."
    • False Positive - A false positive occurs when a legitimate permission-based email is incorrectly filtered or blocked as spam.
    • Filters - "Filtering" is a technique used to block email based on the content in the header, "from:" line, "subject:" line, or body copy of an email. Filtering software searches for key words and other indicators that identify the email as potential spam.
    • Blacklist a.k.a. blocklist - Some ISPs use a blocklist to help them determine which emails should be blocked. Blocklists contain lists of domains or IP addresses of known and suspected spammers. Unfortunately, these blocklists also contain many legitimate email service providers. Just a few spam complaints can land an IP address or email service provider on a blocklist - despite the fact that the ratio of complaints to volume of email sent is extremely low.
    • Whitelist - A whitelist is the opposite of a blocklist. Instead of listing IP addresses to block, a whitelist includes IP addresses that have been approved to deliver email despite blocking measures. It is common practice for ISPs to maintain both a blocklist and a whitelist.

    Rosemary Weiner
of Brass Rose Salon & Spa has agreed to act as our Legislature “watch-dog”.

A letter was sent to Assemblyman Peter J. Barnes to oppose revised regulations in New Jersey (Pennsylvania is moving in the same direction) that would have a vast negative impact on massage therapist, especially in a day spa setting.

This letter and an email broadcast was forwarded to all our NJ & PA members (and non-members from our day spa database) twice about this upcoming change in legislature and we ask everyone to assist in preventing the bill as proposed to pass.

    THIS ONE IS PRICELESS

Some people understand life better, and they call some of these people "retarded"...

At the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win.

All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back - every one of them. One girl with Down's syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This
    will make it better."

Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story...

    Why?
Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course. If you pass this on, we may be able to change our hearts as well as someone else's. "A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle."
