URGENT - Information needed for editorial content
We are preparing an article for the first-ever write-up about day spas online at www.theorganicreport.org a consumer website of the Organic Trade Association. I have a deadline January 20th to introduce spas that use organic products (including linens, cleaning material, etc.) and products used and sold at spas that are labeled "organic"!
Lucky Magazine is asking: Who are our spa members that offer seminars, workshops, etc.? What are the topics, who attends and how to you market them? Please send your information to us at DaySpaAssn@aol.com, and if appropriate we may also post these on our website http://www.dayspaassociation.com.

DSA in the news

Hannelore on CNBC
We were invited and appeared in an interview on television again. CNBC brought a segment just before the holidays on gift certificates and Hannelore was featured three times that Friday talking about SpaWish, SpaFinder, CertifiChecks and 1-800-DaySpas, all national gift certificate member companies.
The DSA is giving an average of 10-12 interviews a month to writers, journalists and editors; Hannelore is quoted often in regional and national magazines and newspapers. The most recent noteworthy write-up was in the December issue of Entrepreneur, where she talked about the still growing new spas opening around the country and the increased profitability of this new industry.
Recently the DSA was invited to participate in the annual Beauty Show in Shanghai, China. We had the honor to present two workshops and participate in a nation-wide publicized news conference with government officials for the new economy of China and meet the Mayor of Shanghai. The Government of China and Natural Beauty, a leading Spa & Beauty manufacturer with a chain of 700 day spas were our host. Hannelore Leavy and Dr. Reinhard Bergel, member of the DSA Advisory Board and co-author with Hannelore of the SPA ENCYCLOPEDIA were there to present the U.S. day spa industry.
Back to Cornell
We will be back at Cornell presenting THE MEDICAL SPA in March. Watch your next newsletter for our report!

Business tidbits ..

MultiTasking - it may be time for you consider giving up this once good time-management of doing two or more things at once. It can often torpedo productivity. "When you try to juggle two balls, you're going to drop one of them" says Ken Gaebler, president of PR firm Walker Sands Communications in Chicago. Author of "The Really Useful guide to Working Smarter, Not Harder" (www.thingglink.com), Ilyce Glink cites that research indicates people who try to do several task at once actually take longer to do them than if they just did one at a time. "When you're interrupted, it takes time to get back in the groove. If you add up five or ten minutes lost to transitional time throughout the day, it really adds up"! From Entrepreneur, Dec.2003
Stress not only effect humans! Aside from "pet spas", do we now want to create a spa-like atmosphere to get tender meat? "Since stress leads to tough meat, everything is done to minimize it ... in Japan, that even includes cattle Massages". Entering the barn at Wagyu Sekal in Puslinch, Ont. about an hour west of Toronto cattle get the royal treatment: massages, soft, classical music and prime beer - "No Budweiser for them, I would not give them anything to drink I wouldn't" says Ken Krosawatusy, the farm owner who exports most of his beef to Japan. Enroute, Nov. 2003
You have heard the term metrosexual - do you know where it comes from?
The term was coined by writer Mark Simpson in1994 to describe straight urban men who are comfortable expressing their feminine side. It shot into the U.S. cultural lexicon on June 22, 2003 with the release of a study on male attitudes and a corresponding story in The New York Times' Style section. Since then, the term has appeared in print more than 200 times, according to Nexis (probably not counting the many times it was used within spa publications)! Fast Company, Oct. 2003
"How you deal with failure determines part of your success as a leader - not only in your own life, but also in the lives of people around you".
Kim Clark, Dean of Harvard Business School
The sounds of silence - in conversation, nonverbal cues can be just as revealing as what's actually said. They're just harder to hear. Simon and Garfunkel hit on this in the 1960's ... "people talking without speaking, people hearing without listing".

The Anti-Spam Law
|
Update from ConstantContact - DSA member whose eNewsletter software program is FREE to you!
CAN-SPAM Act of 2003
While we cannot provide legal advice, we feel it is important to provide you with our interpretation of how the federal law may affect you. This is a summary of some provisions of the new law, and is not a full analysis of how it may apply to you. If you believe you may be affected, you should consult with your own attorney.
The President has signed the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003. We are thrilled with the passing of this legislation. We believe it is a positive step towards fighting spam while making it easier for legitimate email marketers to comply with anti-spam laws.

Do like the big boys do ... contact the hotels near you and your convention center/visitors bureau!
Hoteliers Urbanize Spa Programs for Stressed Travelers
Hyatt Hotels Corp. reconceived its branded spa program to focus more on urban spas, and the needs of business travelers in particular, for treatments that promote not just pampering, but recovery. Like the strategy already in place at Fairmont, Four Seasons and the Ritz-Carlton hotel companies, Hyatt understands that well-heeled business guests need to relieve travel-related stress - to the point where there's little price resistance, assuming the treatments deliver as promised. - Business Travel News, Oct.27, 2003
Luxury is in - no matter how the economy is doing!
Think Starbuck, Victoria's Secret, BMW, Aveda & Viking ranges - all of which command a pretty penny and engender customer loyalty. Trading up: The New American Luxury (Portfolio, 2003) by Michael Silverstein & Neil Fiske, documents their investigation into the forces driving this trend and profiles companies that have cracked the code to success in this market.
Example: Whirlpool - the little buddy in the laundry room
A front-loading washer dryer combo tagged at $2,300 - staggering, considering that the most you would spend is about $600 a pair. But the "Duet" has features never seen on American appliances - it washes big loads, yet uses a skimpy 16 gallons of water - 28 gallons less per load than a conventional washer - it uses less electricity, yet cleans clothes better - it can handle silks and lace as well as sleeping bags and comforters. What's Duet's secret? Besides delivering a better wash, it gives you something even more precious. "By doing larger loads, you can do fewer loads, and the chore is minimized tremendously. It's giving you back some freedom, time and money!" Excerpts from Fast Company - Nov.2003
Nutrition should be an important component of your spa program - you and your clients can eat your way to health - AARP Sep/Oct 2003
Blueberries - boost immunity
Apples - protect lungs
Salmon - benefits the prostate and heart
Eggs - fight eye disease, lower (!) cholesterol
Turmeric - fights cancer, eases pain and swelling
Peanut Butter - combats diabetes, heart disease
Avocado - neutralizes heart risks
Chili Peppers - burn calories
Watermelon - aids prostate health
Whole-Grain Cereal - protects the heart
Massage Therapists make it to the top of trade school education
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- When you hear the words "trade school," do you think of marginal but pricey ventures, often run by hucksters and aimed at a small portion of Americans who couldn't or wouldn't follow the traditional high-school-to-college path?
The top 10 training programs added by the most schools nationwide last year, according to the Association's survey of 1,200 schools: 1. Massage therapy; 2. Medical assisting/medical secretary; 3. Criminal justice/law enforcement; 4. Computer technology; 5. Computer network management; 6. Medical office computer assistance; 7. Medical insurance specialist; 8. Medical insurance coding specialist; 9. E-commerce; 10. Pharmacy assistant
Generally "our schools do not create programs unless there's a great deal of demand from employers, where they've expressed a great shortage," said Bob Martin, executive director of the Career College Foundation. http://www.career.org
